4th Day Updates

Andrew is remaining in the ICU through today, as well- but is much better than yesterday. He was having some issues with fluid in his lungs, but has been working really hard with the Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapists to move on from there- and his lungs are clearer than they were, which is great. Besides working hard with the therapists, Andrew has a lot of decisions to make about things- especially rehabilitation. The family wants nothing but the best, so we are continuing to research and get the most information that we can.

Unfortunately, as Andrew is working so hard with all the therapists, he is still only visiting with immediate family at this time. Please continue to show your support and leave a message for Andrew, as we continue to read them, and we will update you as soon as Andrew is ready for additional visitors.

so do you remember when we first met at ortt's party? i seem to recall driving golfballs or something like that around 7 AM thinking who the hell is this guy partying like a rock star with us? while not the biggest or best party we've ever been to, it is definitely one that i will never forget and you're the reason why.

  3. Keep up the good work and positive attitude. You are blessed with Kalli and your wonderful friends and family that are here to support you and we really are. Every day I am excited to read your updates, so far they have brought more and more good news along with all your great progress. You are such an inspiration.

Thank God for this website. If you didn’t have it, I’d drive Clay insane calling him hourly for updates on your progress.

Now seriously Hip, wiggle those toes, I think in no time you’ll be hip-hopping on your own. Until then remember all the love and support you have throughout the entire world.
Hurry up and get out of that ICU because if you don’t your friends are going to start sneaking in, we are all anxious to see your cute face.

If someone asks me if I believe in miracles, I will forever remember your miracle…

    All my love and support,
    Laura Coenen

  5. I just read Endow's post and have to say that was the first time we had met too! From there, we went on to be roommates (so glad I don't have to hear "Eleanor Rigby" anymore!! haha), I got to be a part of your family's Thanksgiving, and I have since considered you a great friend!

You are an amazing person hip, keep on fighting, keep getting stronger, and I will keep you in my thoughts...I just know your going to come out of this!

Take care my friend, I can't wait to see you again.

  6. Hi Hip,
I feel close enough to call you Hip because I feel like this website is allowing me to peek into your personal world... stalking must run in the family! I love all the stories I am reading about you...though there are alot of "inside jokes" that are probably best left "inside". I truly feel the love and fun you have brought into the lives of many. i wouldn't be surprised if many of your friends/acquaintances don't live vicariously through you! I wish I had a story to remind you of but Ashley's Aunt Julie shared the one I personally experienced. I thought you might've wanted to keep that one on the down/low but I can see your website is going to be a place where all your "sins" (make that "fun") is on display for the world to see. Just to put your "jail" experience in proper perspective for your readers, I will share that your jail time was for your innocent tossing of a snowball inside Lambeau Field. Would hate for everyone to have misconceptions of that event! You are a harmless(fun-loving)little fuzzball!
Dave stopped by St. E's this morning and spoke with Kalli. We'll be dropping off some Grisham books for you to have when you are up to reading and the therapists actually give you time to yourself! No need to return them...pass them on to anyone you meet along the way who has an interest in reading them. As always we continue to pray for you along with countless others. I hope that gives you much comfort and strength. Tari Van Hoof

  8. Andrew- As usual, I was out of the loop way up in the boondocks of Spokane and just found out about your situation.
No doubt that life gave you a big fat lemon here, but I know that you can turn it into some great lemonade! My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I'm visualizing that in the near future you are going to take me out on the sailing trip that we've talked about but never done! :)
You take care and hang tough...Mark.

  9. Andrew,

Had lunch with Mark Lee today and he passed on how you are doing and the amazing perserverance you are showing. Everyone should be as lucky as you are to have such a great support system between your girlfriend, parents, siblings, the Lee's, and your vast circle that is updating here on you your blog. If attitude and a great support system are keys to success, you will be up and at it in no time. I'm going to post as often as I can to give any encouragement I can. I'll also keep Mark in line if you need me to. :)

  10. Hippert,

I am glad to see that everything is going well and your getting to spend some quality time with your therapists! I am looking forward to visiting you in any of the cities that you end up going too for recovery. (I'm pulling for Denver because its a great city) We talked about taking a trip sometime but we should pick a date and put it in stone. We need to get you some unique stamps for your passport, pick a date and place and I'll start planning. Hang in there and I'll be seeing you soon, hopefully in your new and improved location! Bob Schmelzer

P.S. Have Kali or your family let me know if you guys need anything. I'm only an hour or two away and anywhere you guys go. If it is Chicago we have our apartment until July for logistical purposes.

  12. Keep on truckin' Andrew. Since we you are looking for some funny stories I thought I would bring up one that makes me smile to think about.

Remember last summer when Brian and I came to visit? We all decided to go sailing to watch the Sea World fireworks one night. And while it seemed like a great idea at the time, it turned out not to be so much. We ended up getting stuck outside of the marina because the water was too high for HOURS! And then we had the brilliant idea to put Chris on top of the mast and tell us as we were getting closer if we were going to make it under the bridge or not. Oh boy, that could have gone so wrong. I honestly thought we were going to have to spend the night out there on your trusty sailboat. I know there will be a time again someday where we can get ourselves into many more funny situations.

Keep up the positive outlook, it really makes a difference. I am thinking of you, Kalli and your family ever day. I said it once and I'll say it again, you've made me believe in miracles, so wiggle those toes and make another one happen! :)

    Christina

  13. Hippert,

I am sorry to hear of your accident, I know you will keep fighting and working hard to get back on your feet, it is just a matter of time.

I know you like the occasional joke, so here are a couple of really bad ones I like.

What do fish say when they hit a concrete wall? “Dam”

What did the zero say the eight? “nice belt”

A guy finds a sheep walking in the middle of the road so he takes it to the police station, the police officer says, “take it to the zoo.” Next day the police officer sees the same guy walking with the sheep and says “I thought I told you take that animal to the zoo.” The guy responds “I did, now I am taking him to the movies.”

Andrew, keep up the hard work.

  17. Hey Baby Brother -

Man Am I getting to know you a whole lot more than I ever had - all these friends of yours are sharing some great stories. Hope you are up for child size visitors tonight - your niece and nephew want to see for themselves that you are alive. That is what they are telling everyone - "My uncle Andrew, he is alive, ya- he went under water, but now he is alive again." It is amazing what kids like to say.....

Hope after all the therapy you have some life still in you to endure thier Q and A session.

I miss you - Sorry I can not be there as much as the rest, but I finally found an apt and the house needs packing up..... I have some serious speed packing to do!!!

    Later bro!
    Luv Ta and kids.

Spot! Spot! Comeback with that! Bad Dog!
Wait a minute, if this is his spleen, then what's that?
Hand me that... uh... that uh... thingie.
Oh no! I just lost my Rolex.
Damn, there go the lights again...
"Ya know, there's big money in kidneys. Hell, the guy's got two of 'em.
Everybody stand back! I lost my contact lens!
Anyone see where I left that scalpel?
And now we remove the subject's brain and place it in the body of the ape.
Damn! Page 47 of the manual is missing!
Don't worry. I think it is sharp enough.

  19. Andrew,

Your long lost cousin David from Chicago. Jessica, the kids and I are so glad to hear that you are getting stronger everyday - keep on fighting the good fight and know that you have lots and lots of prayers being sent your way! The kids have been asking me every night how you are doing - although the first time I told them about your accident, they said "your cousin Andrew who???" We are going to need to work on that. Jessica's entire family still lives in Green Bay - so we are up there quite a bit. We will connect soon. Any way I know that you are considering The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago as an option - which I can tell you I have only heard great things about. I work downtown everyday and we live just outside the City - so know that if you do choose Chicago, you'll have family close by. Gotta run to catch a train home. Talk to you soon and stay strong.

    -David

  20. Hey Hippie I have some reminiscing to do now:

For instance do you remember when you and Andy decided it would be a good idea to borrow the Pizza Hut golf cart in Florida?!? We had a lot of fun there! Or when we went out on the boat up and down the river, then decided to take it out into the lake and it scared the crap out of Kari (You've been out there so much I'm sure you probably can't recall this one instance). Everytime were with you though there is never a dull moment. You are a great friend to have.

    Love you bud!

  21. Hey! Theresa, Tim, and Sarah were like siblings to me when I was growing up,.. too bad u weren't born yet! Sounds (from blogging friends) like u are an adventure-a-minute kind of guy. So, what's a little near-death experience,...?! LOL
I am sure there r many adventures yet to be had, by the grace of the One who brought u to this place, this time in history.
We continue to pray for u.
A very big part of recovery is the presence of loved ones during the process. I hope u pick a place that is very accessible to family/friends (that was the O.T. in me, speaking!).
